Troopers Hill Management Works
Winter 2008/9

The two photographs below show the heather at the edges of two of the areas cleared during the winter 2008/09.

You can see that there is dead heather that has been uncovered by the clearance. Both these areas of bramble and scrub were spreading and covering more heather each year.

These two are before and after shots for one of the areas.
The before shot was taken at the Trooping the Hill event in the summer.

While it is always a difficult decision to cut trees and scrub, this area being a south facing slope is of particular importance for invertebrates. The spread of the scrub was reducing the area of suitable habitat available. The remaining tree stumps will be removed and then any regrowth of scrub or bramble will be cut again during the year. In time it is hoped that the heather will restablish itself in this area, but even if that doesn't happen the spread of the scrub will have been stopped.
